History of the clutch pencil

History of clutch pencils

The first known pencil was infact a leadholder. To avoid the blackening of the fingers, the graphite was inserted into the end of a hollow stick.

Following to this idea the first pencils with refillable leads for design, architecture and office, were introduced.

In 1929 a Swiss engineer designed the first drawing pencil with pushbutton spring clutch. With this perfected form of clutch pencils it was possible to use different diameters of graphite leads.

This pushbutton spring clutch is still successfully used in all our clutch pencils.
